Budapest is renowned as the “pearl of the Danube” because it is separated into two areas: Buda and Pest, each on a different side of the Danube. While we think this makes Budapest so attractive, we also discovered that it made getting about a little more difficult.

After living in Budapest and exploring the city in every manner possible, Caleb and I have identified the five best methods to get around Budapest, as well as which mode of transportation is best for going to each of the city’s big attractions. Spoiler: your feet are the finest, followed by the tram!

We’ve laid everything out for you in this guide so that you may move around Budapest quickly, easily, and without stress. Whether you’re only staying for a few days or longer. Let’s get started with a sneak glimpse at the stunning #2 tram ride!

Best Way to Get Around Budapest as a Visitor

These are the five modes of transportation we recommend, as well as the attractions to see with them. You can click on each option to go to our thorough tutorial on that topic!

Walking Is The Easiest Way To Get About

Use this approach to travel to almost any place, except *maybe* Heroes Square and Szechenyi Baths.

Yes, Budapest is *a bit* spread out between the Buda and Pest sides, and crossing the Danube River on foot takes a little longer, but you get beautiful views of the river if you take the time to walk across it!

Walking is the greatest way to view all of Budapest’s splendor! We walked 40k steps some days and didn’t mind it. Especially when we spotted the beautiful sunset while heading up to the Gellert hot spas!

Walking from Buda to Pest may only take 30-40 minutes, resulting in more calories burned to replenish with creamy chicken paprikash and Hungarian white wine. 🍷

The Trams Offer A Picturesque Method To Go Without Traffic

Use this method: to get around the pest side and visit Parliament or Margaret Island.

Trams are our second choice since they provide the convenience of wheels while eliminating the traffic of other cars on the road, similar to a bus, making them speedier. You also have a large number of possibilities, with over 40 lines to choose from.

We also prefer trams to buses because they can be rather gorgeous and romantic, as our favorite ride on the #2 tram. Perfect for couples like us!

The Bus System Is The Best Way To Get Over The Danube

If you don’t want to trek from Pest to Buda Castle, try this alternative! Or to and from the airport. The bus system is our third choice because it allows you to experience Budapest’s splendor, although it can take longer due to traffic.

To get to Buda Castle, we recommend taking Bus #16, which runs from Deak Ferenc Ter to Disz Ter, where you may get off and walk to Buda Castle. For your convenience, a photo of the *usual* timetable for this route is provided below:

We also propose taking the bus from the airport to the city center to save money. We also found it to be very punctual! The easiest alternative is to take the 100E immediately from the airport; it’s located outside the arrival area and costs about $USD 6 per person!

Don’t be concerned about purchasing a ticket for it. You can pay simply by tapping your credit card onboard. However, we had to have our credit cards; we couldn’t share one if we used the tap method.

The Subway Is Quick, But Less Scenic Than Above-Ground Options

Use this way to travel to Hero’s Square or the Széchenyi Baths.

The metro is quick, but as a tourist, we recommend using the tram or bus if necessary so you can experience the beauty of Budapest rather than just staring at concrete walls zipping by you.

Having said that, we believe it is the most convenient route to travel to Hero’s Square or the Széchenyi Baths. Simply take the M1 from Deak Ferenc Ter in the city center and exit at Hosok Tere for Hero’s Square or Szechenyi Furdo for the baths.

Insider Tips for Using Public Transport in Budapest

Our #1 advice is to get the Budapest Card. This is a card designed specifically for travelers that includes numerous time frame options such as one day, two days, three days, and unrestricted access to public transportation! Bonus: It provides additional savings on activities throughout the city!

Learn about single travel tickets. In most circumstances, if you buy single tickets (not the Budapest card), you get one ticket for each person for every ride. So, if you need to transfer buses or trams at any time, you’ll need a new ticket.

The metro is an exception to this. Continue transferring till you reach your destination.

Always have your tickets ready. Until you’ve finished using any mode of transportation, so you don’t get stuck in a spot check with your pants down.

Eeerr…What if you don’t have your ticket?

Download the “Budapest Go” app. This software allows you to plan your trip, buy tickets, and even pre-purchase your airport bus ticket. It will save you a great deal of time and stress!

When in doubt, consult Google Maps. The public transit choice never failed us, so it’s a good approach to figure out which option and which line to choose!

If you are heading somewhere during rush hour, do your best to walk. Otherwise, it will probably take longer than you anticipate because you’ll be stopped in traffic or crammed into a full bus or tram!

Conclusion:

Budapest is a city that combines history, culture, and modernism at every step. Navigating Hungary’s capital in 2024 has never been simpler, thanks to the city’s well-connected transportation system, technological improvements, and tourist-friendly infrastructure. Whether you choose to explore on foot, take public transportation, or cycle through Budapest’s picturesque streets, there are many fast and economical ways to get around.

Understanding how to manage the metro, trams, buses, and newer ride-sharing options will allow you to easily discover the city’s iconic attractions, hidden jewels, and one-of-a-kind local experiences.

As you tour this lively capital, keep in mind that it’s more than just going from one location to another; it’s also about the journey. Budapest’s charm stems not just from its attractions, but also from its winding alleyways, old bridges, and breathtaking views.

With this important guide, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your time in Budapest, whether you’re here for a short visit or a longer stay.

Enjoy your travels!
