There are two sites for 12 Bones Smokehouse in North Carolina: one in Arden and one in Asheville. They use basic ingredients to produce everything from scratch, and some of their recipes have been passed down through the generations.

With a rib sauce laced with blueberries and chipotles, they pay homage to Memphis-style BBQ while also adding an Asheville-style BBQ element. They provide platters with an assortment of meats, salads, sides, and sandwiches!

After visiting 12 Bones, even the Obamas declared it to be the greatest barbecue in Asheville, North Carolina.

Fan favorites include the famed jalapeño cheese grits, pulled pork, corn pudding, and cornbread, along with blueberry chipotle ribs. One of the menu’s hidden gems is the turkey sandwich. There are now meats and sauces without gluten. Some say they are the greatest ribs in Asheville.

They work on a first-come, first-served basis and do not take reservations. Both dine-in and takeaway options are offered.

Downtown Location in the River Arts District Hours: On weekdays, they are only open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Their South Asheville facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (15 minutes south of Biltmore Village).

North Asheville and South Asheville are the two sites of Luella’s in Asheville. Their main site on the north side, housed in a former A&W building, opened its doors in 2009. Everything is produced by hand.

Grandma Lue, co-owner Jeff Miller’s grandmother, served as inspiration for Luella’s. Jeff picked up a lot of her secrets and recipes from her. Luella’s specializes in Carolina-style barbecue and southern cooking, drawing flavors from Memphis and Texas.

Popular menu dishes include smoked andouille sausage, cheese n’ comfort fries, Big Boy’s blue ribbon BBQ plate, and ribs. The BBQ platter is a great option to share with a large group of family and friends because it comes with brisket, ribs, chicken, and pig. You get to choose three sides as well.

They work on a first-come, first-served basis and do not accept bookings.
Both dine-in and takeout options are offered.

Daily hours for both locations are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Although Moe’s is a franchise, its award-winning Alabama-style pulled pork and other smoked meats shouldn’t deter you. Situated in the Biltmore Village neighborhood, Asheville’s downtown may be reached within a short drive.

They are well recognized for their daily fresh preparations of pulled pork, ribs, turkey, and chicken that are smoked over hardwood. They provide two distinct sauces in addition to a selection of sides and desserts.

For dessert, make sure to grab banana custard—even if it’s to-go! They also have a lovely terrace outdoors.

Black Bear specializes in heartfelt, old-fashioned BBQ. There are vegetarian alternatives in addition to pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. They offer a casual, family-friendly eating setting.

They have daily specials, and Fridays are a great time to visit for a fiery end to the week! Fun beverages with cane sugar are also available here, and they’re far better than the ones with high fructose corn syrup!

The pulled pork, brisket, mac & cheese, and sweet potato casserole are fan favorites.

Wednesday through Saturday are the hours. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The original and still family-run barbecue restaurant in Asheville, Little Pigs BBQ, first opened its doors in 1963. Just half a mile from the Biltmore, people flock for the chicken and barbecue.

A 15-hour hickory-smoked chopped pork BBQ is offered. When cooking, they don’t use sauces or rubs. This is BBQ in the Carolina style.

Tucked down in the historic Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville is this Texas BBQ with a hint of Hawaiian. Among the audience favorites are Sue’s Huli chicken, crispy ribs, brisket French dip, and poke nachos. Don’t forget to try their renowned banana cream pie either.

Sincerely, I don’t think you could go wrong with this! This is a must-see if you’re in downtown Asheville or close to the Grove Arcade.

Situated in the center of Asheville’s South Slope, Bear’s Smokehouse provides an additional downtown eating choice. In 2020, they began as a food truck and soon after, they turned an abandoned vehicle and truck repair shop into a public dining space.

BBQ in the Kansas City style is their specialty. In addition, they are available in Asheville and Mill Spring, North Carolina.

Cornbread, jerked pork, bear balls, creamy mac & cheese, and brisket with burned ends are some of my favorite foods. There are sauces and rubs without gluten. Additionally, there are vegan selections.


Monday through Thursday. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
From Friday to Saturday. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday noon to 9 p.m.

On the same plot of land as Sweeten Creek Brewery, they also operate a second site in South Asheville.


Asheville native Jonathan Lewis began selling his BBQ from his garage on Facebook in 2017. After going public, he bought a food truck. Pulled pork, chicken, and an assortment of sauces are available at Garage BBQ.

There are thirty-five different sauces on Garage BBQ’s menu, and they vary often. Some of the sauces are pickle, mustard Siracusa, banana-pepper, whisky, and strawberry. There are now meats and sauces without gluten.

Great place to get Carolina BBQ. There’s brisket, chicken, and pulled pork. There are platters and sandwiches with meat, bread, and two sides. For dessert, sample their handmade banana custard.

Asheville is a short drive away from Candler, North Carolina. It began as a food truck operated by Dr. Dave Brown and has now grown into a physical location. They provide pulled pork, chicken, BBQ ribs, and brisket that are all 100% wood-smoked.

The sides that are served are potato salad, collard greens, macaroni and cheese pie, and sweet potato casserole. A vegan alternative is also available. Their daily menu changes.
